Leave No Trace Spotlight, April 12-15
The Virginia Creeper Trail community has been chosen as a 2023 Leave No Trace Spotlight! On April 12-15, a Subaru/Leave No Trace Traveling Team will be in Damascus to deliver Leave No Trace education to the community and partner on local stewardship projects. Events are free to the public and open to all ages.

Wednesday, April 12
8:30-9:30am - Coffee Chat - with the Leave No Trace team at the Damascus Trail Center
10am-12pm - Workshop on Effective Communication of Leave No Trace - for volunteers, retailers, and outdoor recreation professionals who interact with visitors. Email recreation.director (at) damascus.org to RSVP.
Friday, April 14
5:30-7:30pm - Leave No Trace Happy Hour - at Appalachian Heritage Distillery. Join the Leave No Trace team, Virginia Creeper Trail Conservancy, Town of Damascus, and the Appalachian Trail Conservancy for a Happy Hour at a local business. Happy Hour will feature live music, networking with outdoor enthusiasts, and a fundraiser to benefit the Virginia Creeper Trail Conservancy.
Saturday, April 15
8am-12pm - Virginia Creeper Trail Annual Cleanup - Join the Virginia Creeper Trail Conservancy in the 30th Annual Trail Cleanup! For more information on priority locations on the trail, supply pick-up, etc., please visit VACreeperTrail.org. Supply pick-ups will be at the Caboose in Damascus Town Park, Alvarado Station, and the Abingdon trailhead.
In addition, the Mount Rogers Appalachian Trail Club (MRATC) will head east on the Virginia Creeper Trail to perform campsite cleanups near Straight Branch and Creek Junction. RSVP at mratcinfo (at) gmail.com.
1-5pm - Leave No Trace Pop-Up at the Damascus Trail Center - Stop by the Damascus Trail Center for a Leave No Trace Pop-Up! Ask questions, join informative talks, win prizes, and learn more about Leave No Trace.
2pm program - Behind the Scenes of Food on the Trail with Leave No Trace - Have you ever wondered how hikers store and pack their food? Come learn about food storage on the trail!
4pm program - Responsible Campfires with Leave No Trace - Learn responsible Leave No Trace campfire tips on how to improve safety and minimize harm to ecosystems. Enjoy s’mores while learning about campfire best practices!

May to October - Damascus Farmers Market - Open on Saturday mornings at Laurel Creek Park, 127 W Imboden St. Stop by to support local and find fresh produce, meats, eggs, baked goods, craft items, and more. Live music weekly. More info.
May to August - Damascus Town Pool - The Coolest Pool on the Trail is open daily, weather permitting. More info.
May 13 - Town-Wide Yard Sale - Find yard sale vendors at the Town Park and throughout town. To reserve a 15x15' space at the Town Park, register at Town Hall by May 1st. The Town-Wide Yard Sale is always the weekend before Trail Days.
May 19-21 - Appalachian Trail Days Festival - Trail Days is the biggest event of the year in town (and the biggest celebration along the entire Appalachian Trail)! Trail Days is always the weekend after Mother's Day. More info.
June 23 - Trail Town Twirl Contra Dance - Held quarterly at the Rock School Auditorium in partnership with caller Warren Doyle. More info.
July 3 - Independence Day Celebration - at the Town Park
July 22 - Beaverdam Jams - A one-day music festival at the Town Park featuring Dave Eggar and Beth Snapp; full music lineup to be announced, plus food vendors and beer garden
