Hunting

Overview and Local Regulations

Hunters are welcome in the Mount Rogers National Recreation Area, including designated wildernesses. Bows, rifles, shotguns, and muzzleloaders are all permitted during the appropriate seasons. Crossbows are not allowed. Whitetails, turkeys, grouse, squirrels and several other species are abundant.

Hunters must possess the appropriate state and local hunting licenses and stamps as well as a National Forest stamp, and must obey all state and local hunting laws and regulations. Blaze Orange must be worn as dictated by Virginia law and is suggested at other times as well. Flashlights are also recommended when going and coming from the woods in the dark.

Hunters are reminded that it is illegal to shoot a firearm from, across, or within 100 yards of any public road including Forest Service roads open to use by private vehicles. It’s also illegal to discharge a firearm within 100 yards of an established campground. Think safety!

To Report Wildlife Violations

Call 1-800-237-5712
When reporting try to get as much information as possible, such as: What happened;  Where did it happen (be as specific as possible); Who was involved (describe persons, vehicles, names of other witnesses); When did it happen.  Don’t allow the actions of a few outlaws to tarnish the reputation of Virginia’s sportsmen!
